I see there is some confusion around Black Out Tuesday but whatever the confusion I’m ok with a day of rest and solidarity, especially for those of us who are carrying more than usual in this moment. I’m any event, if it’s true that we are to focus on Black folks today I want to share resources for *us* in this moment. Lots floating around for other folks to learn more about Black folks but Black folks actually need all kinds of support in this moment including learning and unpacking, joy and laughter, healing and peace. I already know I’ve forgotten a few like my girl @luvvie on the list so please feel free to share in the comments. If you resting today – I pray your respite is fulfilling. And sometimes the headlines get it right. So grateful for this @hollywoodreporter interview discussing the work I get to do every single day. Such an honor. Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, is not merely an activist — she's a modern-day abolitionist. And as protests over racism, inequality and police brutality have exploded worldwide, Cullors says the answer does not lie in holding police accountable with better training and body cameras. Instead, she demands defunding law enforcement so that black and brown people can be free from what she calls a "well-funded army" that "occupies" them. Power to the people‼️‼️‼️Stonewall was a riot. Not a parade or a dance party. It was a RIOT against the POLICE who consistently raided queer establishments, the only safe spaces where our people could gather in community. Our forebears were FED THE FUCK UP. Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera (pictured) and their comrades including Stormé DeLarverie were frankly OVER IT. And because of their RIGHTEOUS OUTRAGE and COURAGE to RESIST policing, surveillance, and brutality many of us benefit today. We cannot forget that the folks who were the first to push back were BLACK and BROWN TRANS and QUEER PEOPLE, and today, BLACK PEOPLE are still having to fight for our right to exist without threat. As you prepare to celebrate and mark pride, remember that equality has not been reached for us, and respectability politics (“doing it the right way”) has rarely worked for those most marginalized, invisibilized and silenced. #happypride #stonewallwasariot I AM CELEBRATING PRIDE BY GIVING TO @transjusticefp which redirects funds directly to grassroots trans justice groups run by and for trans people.
